Lake District Landscape Photography

By Daniel Kay

Daniel Kay Landscape photographer admiring stunning view.

Welcome

I'm Daniel Kay, a landscape photographer living and working in the English Lake District. I'm passionate about nature and have taken an interest in photography since a young age. In 2015, my interest in photography merged with a new found love for being outdoors; introducing me to the world of landscape photography! With just over 10 years of experience in the field, my style of photography has for the most part, stayed the same. Bright and colourful or moody and dramatic, the light is what captivates me! At times life can be a struggle, something I imagine the vast majority of people can relate to. Witnessing and photographing these landscapes in all their glory helps me navigate through some of the darker days of life. Hopefully, as the viewer of my work, you’ll be in some way able to experience the same joy I felt at the exact moment I pressed the shutter button!

My main area of focus is where I'm based; here in the beautiful county of Cumbria. However, you will find photographs from other locations such as The Peak District and Scotland in the further afield section of my portfolio.

All of my work is available for sale as high quality prints or framed prints and a selection of panoramic images are available as stretched canvas. I'm currently working on additional products but feel free to contact me if you have any product requests.

Latest landscape photography

I’m incredibly lucky and grateful to be based just a stones throw from the Lake District National Park. This means that I usually get to explore the stunning lakes and fells that Cumbria has to offer a good few times a week! Below you’ll find my latest published work along with a brief write up on why/how I took the shot.

I don’t publish all of the photographs I take as I want to keep the quality of my portfolio high! If you’re interested in seeing some of the pictures that didn’t quite ‘make it’, be sure to check out my blog!

This morning was a strong reminder to myself of why I should always push to get myself out, especially when I’m not fully feeling like it. The alarm went off at 3am and I just wanted to go straight back to sleep. The forecast was for low wind/calm conditions and a bit of medium cloud cover, so it really didn’t help when I checked the Ullswater webcam and saw none of what I was hoping for. After a brief moment on procrastination, I dragged myself up and fully committed myself. My trick is making myself a nice cup of coffee, as there’s no going back after that! My original plan was to go lakeside at Ullswater, but my lack of motivation led me to decide against making the journey over Kirkstone Pass. Instead, I told myself I would go for a walk at The River Brathay and then head straight back home to bed. Well, this was definitely the best decision I could have made! After passing Clappersgate I was pleasantly surprised to hit a nice big bank of fog, which instantly flipped my mood! It’s funny how a brew will usually take around 10 minutes to kick in, but give a landscape photographer some nice conditions and they will awaken in mere milliseconds! I spent the good part of 2 hours hanging around this lovely little spot, waiting for the light to come out and the fog to lift a little. This was the moment that happened and in the 10 or so years I’ve been taking photographs, I don’t think I’ve ever shot something so perfectly serene as this view. It was as if for the couple of minutes it lasted, time just stood completely still. Although there was birdsong in the background, you could almost feel the silence!
